Looking through old LiveJournal entries that I wrote between 2005 and 2007 bring back some pretty fucking horrible memories. Even though I was a relatively happy person at the time, I now don't think that I had much of anything to be happy about back then. Life is a lot better now.

What have I been up to lately?

1. Nichole and I are doing well. We've been together for two months as of yesterday, and she surprised me with a collage of pictures of us in a picture frame to commemorate the occasion. I can't look at it without smiling.

2. I've been officially through with DDR for a few months now. 2008 will be remembered as the year that I finally left the dance game scene (or what's left of it), as I haven't shown my face at any of the bonfires, potlucks, or 5 entrant Swiss tournaments in roughly a year. 2009 will be remembered as the year where I stopped playing dancing games altogether. Also, DDR X looks terrible (like, almost ITG bad), so I doubt that any future release will sway me from this position unless Konami gets their shit together and really wows me. I still think DDR is fun and I'd recommend the game to almost anyone that has never played it, but I think it's good to know when to move on. Frankly, I think it's kind of sad that it took me this long, and I give Simone Litonjua full permission to make fun of me some more for it.

3. I graduated a couple of weekends ago. Hello, BA. Fuck off, college.

4. Still working at Disneyland, sadly. I was informed two weeks ago by one of my managers that I'm being promoted to lead status, but I'm still ready to drop Disney like a bad habit as soon as I find a better job. Now that I'm a college grad, I really have no excuse to be working there for much longer.

5. Still really good-looking. Some things never change.

6. I like basketball now. Why the fuck did it take me this long to get interested in a competitive professional sport? Watching Laker games with Edgar Nunez is a blast. The Magic might as well not even show up to LA on Sunday, by the way.

7. I want to pick up a martial art. I really liked the self-defense course that I took last semester, and now I want to learn an actual fighting style. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu looks really good to me right now, and sometime soon I plan on researching some good dojos in the area. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to do that (or much of anything, these days) because...

8. Working 40 hour weeks is making me realize how much I don't like working 40 hour weeks.

9. I'm now a vegetarian. Its done wonders for my sleeping habits and energy levels, let me tell ya.

My week

3/22
Study all day for Monday's midterm.
Do laundry.
Show up to work at 10:30pm.

3/23
Clock out at 6:40am
Either sleep or brush up on studying for a few hours until school from 11:00am until 6:45pm. Aforementioned midterm scheduled for 4pm.
Go home and sleep until 10:30pm, when I'll do the exact same 10:30pm - 6:40pm shift again.

3/24
Clock out at 6:40am.
Go home and fucking sleep.
Do homework that is due on 3/25. Two small projects must be completed.

3/25
Go to school from 11:00am until 6:45
Go home and do whatever until 10:30pm, when I'll do the 10:30pm - 6:40am shift once again.

3/26
Clock out at 6:40am, praise Jesus.

Let's see how this turns out.

Also, to Ryan, Friday evening was my first time playing DDR Universe 3. And by that I mean the actual game on an Xbox 360, not a bunch of simfiles on StepMania. Great game.

This vacation that I'm taking down here in SD was long overdue. This is a nice break from school, a nice break from work, and a nice break from a bunch of drama that has been dumped on me over the past couple of days. Methinks I'll be something of a hermit for the next several days while I recharge.

Today, I got out my N64 and started playing games that I hadn't touched in years. I've been playing the shit out of Goldeneye 007 and Banjo-Kazooie and loving every minute of it. I noticed that my time log for my old B-K save dictates that I logged over 62 hours into that game. Hahaha...sounds about right. The absence of awesome games like these is probably the biggest reason why I kinda fell out of gaming. Is there a 3D platformer that is as good as the N64's best platformers yet? Is there a FPS that meshes action along with stealth while providing awesome level design and challenging stage missions as good as Goldeneye 007 did?

Nintendo attempts to quell the dearth of upcoming quality Wii software by announcing re-releases of both Pikmin games, Mario Power Tennis, and the first two Metroid Prime games for Q1 '09. The most noteworthy update to these re-releases seems to be the addition of Wiimote support.

...

Please tell me why I thought that buying this system was a good idea. Even with the backup launcher, I find myself at a loss of games to play.

On the plus side, at least the new Wario Land game is really fun.

Officially looking for a new job.

The economy is affecting Disney to the point that I am now averaging one day of work per week due to Disney's new budget cut. I cannot presently be a full time employee because I still have a semester of school to go, so my part time status effectively makes hours extremely difficult to come by. The fact that my department is plenty overfilled with employees doesn't help matters either.

My one year mark with Disney is a little more than a month away. As much as I like my job, I doubt I'll make it to two.

The max unlock code for DDR SN2 is out, and frankly, I'm not too excited. I'm at Camelot Golfland for the first time in a good while and playing these songs is giving me mild enjoyment at best. I think that after almost seven years, I'm finally getting over DDR. The competitive spirit that was keeping me going for most of those years is all but gone, and I don't feel much of an urge to play to better myself. I doubt I'll ever fully stop playing, but I think my playings will only continue to grow more and more infrequent.

I wonder what my next big hobby will be.

Well, that settles it. I doubt we're ever going to see a decent Sonic the Hedgehog game again.

The title of Proposition 8 is "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry."

I can't believe anyone actually sees eliminating rights as something that's not completely fucked up, especially when we're in the year 2008.

2D sidescrollers

I've been playing video games a lot more lately, thanks in no small part to the Wii's Virtual Console. I stopped being a hardcore gamer around the time I started high school, but lately I've been dedicating a lot of time to them.

Recently, I've found that my favorite gaming genre is most likely the 2D sidescroller genre. I've been spending much of my gaming time with those, and I lament the fact that 2D sidescrollers kinda died off with the advent of 3D gaming in the 32-bit/64-bit generation.

However, I've noticed that while I love 2D platformers, I am very picky when it comes to them. A sidescroller needs to be very good to hold my interest, and a lot of the most popular ones just don't seem to do it for me.

Platformers that I enjoy:
Donkey Kong County (except for the third one, that game is awful)
Sonic (of course)
Vectorman (way too underappreciated)

And that's really about it, come to think about it. Mega Man and Mario just don't hold my interest, unfortunately. I'll probably give Ristar a try once I finish both Vectorman games; I've heard good things about it.
